In ancient texts on Vedic astrology mainly 96 avsthas of planets had been dealt with and out of them is Balyaadi avasthas and if these avasthas of planets are taken into consideration then the analysis of any horoscope will become meaningful.
There are 5 types of Balyaadi avasthas of Planets when any planet / planets in odd sign in one's horoscope:

(1) Baal Avastha (0 to 06 degrees)

(2) Kumar Avastha (06 to 12 degrees)

(3) Yuva Avastha (12 to 18 degrees)

(4) Vriddh Avastha (18 to 24 degrees)

(5) Mrit Avastha (24 to 30 degrees)

But when the planet / planets in one's horoscope occupies even signs then the pattern of Avastha became reversed:

(1) Baal Avastha (24 to 30 degrees)

(2) Kumar Avastha (24 to 18 degrees)

(3) Yuva Avastha (18 to 12 degrees)

(4) Vriddh Avastha (12 to 06 degrees)

(5) Mrit Avastha ( 06 to 0 degrees)

If the pattern of aforesaid Balyaadi avasthas are compared for planets occupying odd and even signs in one's horoscope then it is understood that planet / planets occupying 12 to 18 degrees either in odd / even signs are in Yuva avastha and most effective.

Now a big question appears how to use this concept of Avasthas?

If you find in any horoscope a planet very well developed in Dashmansh chart but occupying Vriddh avstha in main chart will not give results pertaining to profession in full measures but of it occupies yuvaavastha in main chart then it will give results pertaining to his profession in full measures in its dasha / antardasha.

But if avastha based at the division of a sign in 3 parts are taken into consideration then it is said to be Jagraataadi avastha and they are as follows:

When in any horoscope planet / planets occupying Odd sign:

(1) 0 to 10 degrees : Jagraat avastha

(2) 10 to 20 degrees : Swapana Avastha

(3) 20 to 30 degrees: Sushupti Avastha

And when in any horoscope planet / planets occupying even sign then this pattern becomes reverse in order:

(1) 30 to 20 degrees : Jaagrat Avastha

(2) 20 to 10 degrees : Swapan Avastha

(3)10 to 0 degrees :Sushupti Avastha

The concept this Jagraati avastha is applied to know the success and failure of one's efforts in any directions. To get success without efforts is different from to get success with temporal effects.

Pending promotions are different from preparation and getting success in competition.

The aforesaid concept of Jagraatadi avastha is applied to know the success in attempts to clear exams, to win games and so on

Jagratadi Avastha Vs Deeptadi Avastha By Vishal Aksh

In the comments section of my previous post “Avasthas Of Planets”, someone wrote “Jagraatadi avastha is based on dignity, no? In Cp. 24 of BPHS the definition of Jagraatadi avastha is:1.Awakening, 2. Dreaming and 3. Sleeping States. If a Grah is in its own Rāśi, or in exaltation, it is said to be in a state of awakening (alertness). In the Rāśi of a friend, or of a neutral it is in dreaming state, while in an enemy’s Rāśi, or in debilitation it is in a state of sleeping.

According to a Grah, being in Awakening, Dreaming, or Sleeping states, the results, due to it will be full, medium, or nil.”

Now I am writing in this post the answer of the question raised by that person about Jagratadi Avasthas of Planets:

(1)   If you think logically you will find a planet in exaltation is different from a planet in its own sign, a planet in its debilitation sign is different from a planet in its enemy’s sign in giving its results and similarly a planet in its friend’s sign is different from a planet in its neutral sign. Different results are allotted to a planet occupying (1)Its exaltation sign, (2) Its own sign, (3) Its friend’s sign and (4) Its enemy sign.

(2)   But a planet in its debilitation sign is supposed to give two types of results (1) totally adverse results (2) The results of its exaltation sign if it gets cancellation of debilitation.

(3)   Keeping this in view the ancient Indian rishi designed the Avasthas of Planets and these Avasthas of Planets were so well designed by those Indian rishi that they are also used to understand many of the hidden secrets of Vedic astrology.

(4)   When you look at what is written under (1) & (2) you will find the categorization of Jagrratadi avasthas of planets as defined by him does not fit on it so there is something wrong in it.

(5)   I do not say that he is wrong but as I always used to say that whatever we know about Vedic astrology is from Vedic classical astrology written in Sanskrit and while translating from Sanskrit shloka to Hind, English or any language in the world the translators or commentators generally do err due to their (1) ignorance in understanding the inner meaning of Sanskrit word (2) the era of any powerful astrologer is going on at the time of translating the Sanskrit work to different languages. For example up to year 2000 the era of Dr. B. V. Raman was going on in Vedic astrology and he gave more importance to Navansh chart and that is why in that era the Sanskrit word Ansh had been translated as Navansh otherwise the the Sanskrit word Ansh represents Shodash Varga (16 divisional charts) and (3) Translator or Commentator may have his own views. So the definition of Jagratadi avasthas of planets as given by him is nothing but such type of an err done by that translator of Brihit Prashara Hora Shaastra from which he has read that type of definition about jagratadi avasthas of planets.

(6)   In Brihit Prashara Hora Shaastra the following Sanskrit shloka has been written:

त्रयंशादंशं त्रिभागं चकल्पयित्वा पृथक पृथक ॥१॥

In Englishscript the above Sanskrit shloka may be written as:

TryanshadanshamTrebhagam Ch Kalpyetvaa  Prithak Prithak!! 1 !!

Meaning Of Above Sanskrit Shloka: Imagine three parts of thirty degrees !! 1 !!

(6.1)The second Sanskrit shloka is:

विषमादिक्रमेणैव समे वै विपरीतकम ॥२॥

The above Sanskrit shloka in English script may be written  as:

Vishmaadekrmenaeva Samae vaee Vipreetkm !! 2 !!

Meaning Of Above Shloka: In odd signs the Jagratadi avsthas is according to order and in even signs there is reverse order !! 2 !!. This type of Avastha is made cleared in next shloka:

(6.2) The next Sanskrit Shloka in this context is as follows:

विज्ञाय प्रथमं पुंसां जाग्रत्स्वप्नसुषुप्तिका ॥३॥

The above Sanskrit shloka in English script may be writtenas:

Vigyaya Prathmam Punsaam Jagratswpansushuptika !! 3 !!

Meaning Of Above Sanskrit Shloka: Everyone must know the Jagrat Avastha (State of Awakening), Swapna Avstha (State of Dreaming) & Sushuptika Avastha (State of Sleeping) first.

(6.3)Combining Sanskrit Shloka !!2 !! & !! 3 !! it becomes clear that:

When in any horoscope planet / planets occupying Odd sign:

(1) 00 to 10 degrees: Jagraat avastha

(2) 10 to 20 degrees: Swapana Avastha

(3) 20 to 30 degrees: Sushupti Avastha

And when in any horoscope planet / planets occupying even sign then this pattern becomes reverse in order:

(1) 30 to 20 degrees: Jaagrat Avastha

(2) 20 to 10 degrees: Swapan Avastha

(3) 10 to 00 degrees: Sushupti Avastha

(7)   Planet / Planets in Jagrat Avastha (State of Awakening) give success in works

(7.1)Planet / Planets in SwapanAvastha (State of Dreaming) give less success in works

(7.2) Planet / Planets in Sushupti Avastha (State of Sleeping) give no results

(8) If point (6.3) is looked at carefully everyone can understand that Planet / Planets irrespective of odd or even sign they occupy will be under state of dreaming within ten degree to twenty degrees.

(9) Here exists the greatest confusion this is distribution pattern of three equal parts of a sign of thirty degrees also fits on Draskan Chart and in that chart:

(9.1) In every sign from 00 to 10 degrees: Sun, Mars & Jupiter get strength

(9.2) In every sign from 10 to 20 degrees: Mercury & Saturn get strength

(9.3) In every sign from 20 to 30 degrees Moon & Venus get strength.

(9.4) Everyone can see Avastha model & Drashkan Model give opposite results. For example if in any horoscope Saturn is in 10 to 20 degrees of any sign here it becomes powerful by gaining Drashkan strength and weak by occupying Swapan Avastha(State of Dreaming) and there may be similar confusions in this context and perhaps keeping this in eyes several commentators or translators did err while translating this Jagratadi Avastha of Planets from Sanskrit to any other language.

(9.5) The main purpose of this Jagratadi Avastha to know the results of success and failures in any works and the purpose of drashkana bala is to know the prosperous periods and it does not mean the success of any desired work may occur only in prosperous periods. One may get success in completion but it does not mean he is enjoying prosperous period.

(10) The Avastha based on the planets occupying their exaltation or their own sign etc is known as Deeptadi Avastha and they are nine in number. They are as follows:

(10.1) Deepth Avastha: Planet / Planets occupying their exaltation sign are said to possess Deepth Avastha and the dasha of such planets give one Landlord ship, enthusiasm, courage, wealth, property, vehicles, respect & fame.

(10.2) Swasth Avastha: Planet / Planets occupying their own signs are said to possess Swasth Avastha. Such planets occupying this Swasth Awastha in their Dasha give sound health, recognition from rulers, wealth, education, fame & lands.

(10.3) Mudit Avastha: Planet / Planets occupying signs of their intimate friend are said to possess Mudit Avastha. The dasha of such planets give one beautiful cloths, pilgrimage, hearing of Vedic texts & vehicles.

(10.4) Shant Avastha: Planet / Planets occupying the signs of their friends are said to possess Shant Avastha. The dasha of such planets give one comforts, religiousness, lands & vehicles.

(10.5) Deena Avastha: Planet / Planets occupying the signs of their neutral planets are said to possess Deena Avastha. The dasha of such planets give one set – back in career, oppositions from one’s relatives, earning from low livelihood, social boycott and diseases in various forms.

(10.6) Dukhi Avastha: Planet / Planets occupying the signs of their enemies are said to possess Dukhi Avastha. This dasha give various pains, foreign travel, deep sufferings on account of relatives, troubles from thieves, troubles from fire & troubles from king.

(10.7) Vikal Avastha: The plane / Planets in conjunction with an inauspicious planet are said to possess Vikal Avastha. These dasha of planets give mental troubles, acute pains, sufferings on account of deaths of one’s relatives, fear from thieves and diseases in various forms.

(10.8) Khala Avastha: The planet / Planets in conjunction with most inauspicious planets are said to possess Khala Avastha. These dasha give clashes, mental troubles in acute forms, sufferings to one’s parents, wasteful expenditures, loss of lands and defamation.

(10.9) Kopa Avastha: Planets / Planets in deep conjunction with Sun are said to possess Kopa Avastha. These dasha give one various pains, loss of wealth, sufferings to one’s relatives and he also suffers from the diseases of eyes.

(11) In Vedic astrology the concept of Avasthas of Planet appear to be confusing but in reality it is unique concept and when it is seriously applied it give not only amazing results but also indicate new lines of research. Astrologers having experience of many years in the field of Vedic astrology can understand this.
